25′ Tape Measure

September 12, 2024 — Day 12

Paradox Brewery, North Hudson, NY — Keene, NH

We’re home!

But let’s back up a bit. There’s not too much to back up. We had been planning on paving our driveway and putting in a concrete pad for Clifford. But do we back it down the driveway and go front ways into the pad. Or, go front ways down the driveway, and back it into the pad? The second one is better, but only better if we can then make a hard right turn and go front ways out of the driveway. So what’s our turning circle?

Just why are we blathering on about this. You see, we woke up in a brewery parking lot, which should be a great opening for a short story, right? Paul realized we could measure our turning circle!

So we did.

We woke up in the morning to an empty parking lot, so Susan cranked the wheel hard left and Paul walked alongside dropping orange plastic leveling blocks.

Paul had a 25′ tape measure in his ham radio kit (susan here: of course he did.) and we measured the circle that Susan just drove and that Paul had just marked. It was over 70′ wide. That’s not going to happen on our driveway. We’ll be backing in or out, not sure which.

Then we drove home, uneventfully, and neglected the blog for about a month. But yay, we’ve been home. Traveling is great fun. But coming home is great also.

The problem with blogging so far after the trip is that we have no idea of the exact route. Google has its own ideas, but we know we went south of Lake George, where Paul spent a few summer vacations. But Paul, at least, thinks he remembers going through Dorset, not Chester. But, who knows? And also, does it really matter?
