Random Observations
I woke up at 1AM again, comforted by the tick of the furnace. Ok, it wasn’t running, it is much warmer down here, I think our low was 50 degrees last night.
I remembered all these random thoughts I hadn’t blogged about, so here they are!
- The trees are funny down here, then they got even weirder. We first started seeing these weird pines trees, the needles are in giant, almost spherical, clumps. I need to find out what they are. Then Susan saw a palm tree. I figured it was just planted. Now we see lots of them. Interesting.
- Flowers and buds! We’re seeing daffodils on the medians of 95 and all the trees are at least starting to bud out.
- It’s so nice to have the windows open!
- We’ve only seen 1 Confederate flag, then again, we spent most of our time on 95 which doesn’t have businesses road side. It was on some Civil War’s Generals roadside museum but, still, I found it jarring, but not unexpected. Once we hit the side roads I expect we’ll see more.
- 95 is busy but tiny down here, just two lanes wide, but it under construction a lot. I guess they are making it wider. Entrance ramps are much longer than up north.
- There is evidence of hurricane damage all over the place, usually exit signs on 95 are blown over, but we’ve seen other blown over things. It’s Februrary and hurricane season was awhile ago. I don’t know why they are not repaired yet.
- Gas is much cheaper down here. I know that a large part of gas prices are state taxes, but still, much cheaper down here.
- There are lots of billboards. Fast food and lawyers, the truck lawsuit lawyer’s phone nummer is 999-9999 but they didn’t get the (800) prefix. The car lawsuit company has (800) 777-7777. I’ll be they’re better since they could afford the 800 prefix. LOL. Oh, also lots of ammo and fireworks billboards.
- We have lots of birds down here, no new life birds yet, but this tiny farm seems to have several families of blue birds. I’ve never seen them up north but Susan has, lots. She has better birder eyes than I do.
- I’ve already had to fix one small thing on the trailer, the door latch was sticking so I sprayed it with some dry silicone lube. That seems to have fixed it, hopefully it doesn’t eat the plastic.
Two days ago we were pretty sure we couldn’t keep the trailer for extended trips. We’ve even been shopping online for drivables. But now that we’ve had 2 days of seeing stuff, not just the drive, park, eat grind, we’re starting to think that maybe it is possible to make extended trips in the trailer. It is certainly cheaper to keep the trailer. We really like it, and we like how small it is. But how small it is is also the problem. On the way back we’ll stop in at a huge RV store around Richmond. They have more units for sale that are probably in all of NH, it was enormous. The other question is, will we like extended trips. We won’t know that for a while.
We have a very short drive today to a campsite outside Charleston SC, just 37 miles! We’re going to spend 2 nights there, heading into Charleston for some history and downtime. We’re also going to visit an Audobon site today on the way and hopefully see some life birds.
