The Land of Cotton
March 23, 2023 – Day 35
Cotton. Who knew that Texas was a big source of cotton? Neither of us did. Over dinner last night we asked Clinton, the owner of the Fillin’ Station “So what do you all do for work here?” He told us that the main source of employment in the area was farming cotton and cattle or oil & gas jobs. We saw fields of cotton, not planted, but with remains of last years crop still visible.
We drove through the fields for a bit, eventually stopping for gas in the little town of Eden TX and found this awesome mural.
Soon the terrain was replaced by the same rolling hills we experienced going west.
It was nice to see the live oaks reappearing.
We keep on seeing these things and have no idea what they are. We’re nowhere near Roswell BTW.
We had to run some errands and did so just north of San Antonio, in the suburb of Boerne, which is pronounced “Bernie.” Really, it is.
We got groceries at an H-E-B, which was a new one for both of us and it was huge. It’s a cross between Costco and Trader Joe’s. We were both pretty impressed with it.
They sold this abomination!
So we got to experience the joys of San Antonio traffic, and this is on the loop road!
I took the photo since Susan was looking for a place to stay. We had planned on staying at a Texas Rest Area, they are very nice and permit overnight camping, but it was so hot we wanted the AC.
She found a place that is decent, right off the highway and it has nice level lots. No amenities but we’re just passing through. This was the view when we pulled in though.
Hey cool, we passed 5,000 miles today!
