The “Other” Home
April 10, 2023 – Day 54
Travel day today, not much to say or even photograph. But, I wish I had taken a picture down in DelMarVa. You see, we only traveled 250 miles but we went from the flat farmlands of DelMarVa to the rolling hills of PA. Surprisingly, we didn’t travel all that far. This might have been the biggest daily terrain change we’ve seen all trip.
The fields in DelMarVa were flat and covered with hay, barley, or straw. We know that because we could read the signs on the farms and the signs on the insurance agency, “Hail Damage Coverage – Hay & Barley.” Susan told me of trip to VA she took decades ago where they had golf ball sized half and a decent check from the insurance company for damage to the car!
Here’s a typical PA farm.
So why is this the “other” home. I grew up outside Philadelphia and one dominant form of architecture is the stone house, they were everywhere, built probably in the 1700-1800s, they are gorgeous. We passed so many on the way to the campsite it brought back fond memories. The house I grew up in was brick but it was on a busy street where there dozens of these houses down the street. All of them were covered in stucco at some point (susan here: presumably easier to do than repointing all the stones.) Then one day one of the homeowners removed the stucco and found the wonderful stone underneath! Soon, all of the homes were restore.
Full stop. I’m wrong. I can’t believe it. I just went to Google Street View and there were only 2 house that were uncovered! Mind is blown, I knew that for a certainty and it is wrong. Oops!
